Kirsty and Hen’s autumn wedding at Sopley Mill was everything they dreamed of — warm, joyful, personal, and bursting with thoughtful handmade touches. Set against the backdrop of the River Avon, their day combined heartfelt moments with pure fun, all wrapped in an autumn palette of burnt oranges, deep greens, and golden tones, supplemented by their own touches of knitted pumpkins and highland cows!

Both families have deep roots in Scouting and Guiding, and this became a wonderfully unique thread running throughout the day — from games to décor, to the spirit of community and laughter that shaped every moment. Sopley Mill is one of my favourite Dorset wedding venues to photograph and film. The soft, natural light throughout the building, the brick textures, the riverside ceremony space and the grounds all lend themselves beautifully to candid, documentary-style wedding photography.

For couples who aren’t keen on posing or want the day captured authentically, Sopley Mill is perfect — and that was exactly the case for Kirsty & Hen. As a hybrid photographer-videographer, I captured their entire story in stills, movement and sound — including drone footage of the venue and a full wedding trailer.

Before heading to the ceremony, Kirsty and Hen had a dress reveal that felt completely ‘them’. Kirsty appeared in the upstairs window of Sopley Mill in her gorgeous gown, while Hen waited below with their back turned, laughing and trying not to sneak a glance too soon. It was such a fun, joy-filled way to share that first look without losing the surprise.

Documentary-Style Moments at Sopley Mill

One of the things I love most about Sopley Mill weddings is how naturally meaningful moments unfold. There’s no need for posing or staging — the surroundings, the light, and the people do all the storytelling. Kirsty and Hen’s ceremony was the perfect example of that. Every look, every laugh, every squeeze of a hand felt genuine and unforced.

And because the mill sits right beside the water, you get this beautiful soft light bouncing back onto the couple. It’s a dream for candid photographs and for hybrid video, capturing those tiny flickers of emotion that happen between words.

Their ceremony took place outdoors beside the water — calm, intimate, and full of emotion. Surrounded by family and friends, Kirsty and Hen chose personal vows that had everyone smiling (and a few people crying happy tears).

A Bubble-Filled Confetti Moment

After the ceremony, Kirsty and Hen walked out into a shower of bubbles. It suited them perfectly — fun, colourful, a little whimsical, and absolutely full of laughter. These kinds of exits are ideal for couples who want something a bit more relaxed than traditional confetti but still want that joyful “just married” moment captured.

Personal Details That Made the Day Theirs

Because both families are deeply rooted in Scouting and Guiding, the whole day had hints of woodland adventure, teamwork, and community spirit — from the handmade décor to the peg game that had everyone secretly trying to outwit each other.

These details always shine at venues like Sopley Mill. The warm brick walls and cosy mill rooms create a gorgeous backdrop for personal touches, and the autumn styling felt perfectly at home there.

A Ceilidh on the Riverside Lawn

Kirsty and Hen hosted an outdoor ceilidh and barn dance — one of my favourite parts of the day to capture. With the mill behind them, and their guests linking arms and spinning across the lawn, there was this brilliant sense of movement and celebration.

This is where hybrid coverage really shines: photos tell the story beautifully, but watching everything unfold in video — the laughter, the music, the energy — adds an entirely different depth to the memories.

Group Photos with a Twist — Including Drone Coverage

Sopley Mill has so many great spots for group photos — the gardens, the riverside, the bridge — so we used a mixture of classic arrangements and more playful options. We also captured a full group shot from above with the drone, which gives such a lovely sense of place and scale.

Drone photography and videography are included in my hybrid packages, and Sopley Mill is one of the best venues for it — the river, red brick mill and greenery frame these shots beautifully.

Autumnal Styling – Cake, Colours & Cosy Details

Kirsty and Hen embraced the season with rich autumn tones, knitted pumpkins, and one of the most creative cakes I’ve ever seen, made by Hen's mother. Very much in the style of the day it included a camping style cake topper and featured a fondant version of their beautiful dog Winnie. Inside the mill, the soft lighting and warm palette made every detail feel even richer — a dream for capturing texture and colour.

Evening Magic – Marshmallows, Fairy Lights & Live Music

As evening settled in, the atmosphere turned cosy and intimate. Guests gathered around the fire pit to toast marshmallows while fairy lights reflected softly across the river.

Later, Kirsty was surprised by a performance from Raise Your Voice Choir — a moment filled with emotion, laughter, and a few tears. It’s exactly the kind of moment that hybrid coverage preserves so beautifully, because the sound and movement are as important as the visuals.

The First Dance & Late-Night Celebrations

Kirsty and Hen’s first dance was surrounded by the people they love most, all singing along with the choir. From there, the dance floor came alive with barefoot spins, big laughs, and the kind of joy you can only capture when people forget the camera is there.

This is exactly why I shoot in a candid, documentary style: the real magic happens when people feel free to just be themselves.

If you’re planning a Sopley Mill wedding and love candid, natural photography — or want the memories captured on both film and video through hybrid coverage — I’d love to hear from you.

Every wedding here feels completely unique, and it’s one of my favourite Dorset venues to photograph and film. If you'd like to check out the video, as well as more of the gallery, you can view it HERE. View my packages
